Phosphatidylserine or PS is a phospholipid important to cell communication and the transfer of biochemical messages into the cell (notably within the brain and central nervous system). Ascorbic Acid (Vitamin C) is one of the safest and most effective nutrients necessary for the growth, development and repair of all body tissues. Many people take it to improve many conditions such as the common cold, viruses, and infections of the immune system, heart health, depression, scurvy, and physical and mental stress.In 1960, researchers from Texas Woman’s University in Texas gave 236 school children and 115 university students IQ tests. The students’ vitamin C levels were tested and the students were classified as high or low. Mostly, the students with the highest vitamin C levels scored higher on the IQ tests by about 5 to 10 points. Later in the study, orange juice, high in vitamin C, was given to the students for six months. The results indicated that the test scores improved very little for the students who already had high vitamin C levels. However, the students with low vitamin C levels showed an increase in IQ by about 4 points. The study documented that as the blood concentration of the vitamin C increases, so does the test IQ scores.

Caffeine is a naturally occurring chemical stimulant found in seeds, leaves, and fruit of some plants. Its use dates back as far as 300 to 800 AD when a goat herder in Ethiopia discovered his goats did not sleep during the night after eating coffee berries. He took the berries to a monk who brewed the first batch of coffee and noticed its effects on awaking the senses and cognition.Caffeine works by activating the central nervous system (CNS), heart, muscles, and the centers that control blood pressure. As seen with the goats, it helps fight drowsiness while creating alertness. Caffeine’s stimulating properties generate fast, clear thinking, greater focus, and better body coordination. An interesting study in the UK performed with bees, documented caffeine’s effectiveness on short-term memory and learning. The caffeine content in the plant Coffea was measured and the sugar content in Citrus was measured. Both plants have distinct odors and flowers that attract the bees. The bees were trained Pavlovian style (think of the Pavlov’s dog experiment) to stick out their tongues for odor and food rewards. The result was astounding! The bees that fed on the caffeinated nectar were three times better able to recall the flowers’ odor 24 hours later.Another study lead by Harris Lieberman of U.S. Army Research Institute of Environmental Medicine in Natick, MA, involved a group of sailors training to become Navy Seals. During their rigorous training, they are routinely sleep-deprived and are subjected to a variety of stressors such as cold temperatures and exhausting physical activities. One group of sailors was given a caffeine supplement and the other given a placebo. The group given a moderate dose of caffeine was shown to enhance attention span and alertness. Lieberman also noted the sailors seemed to have an improvement in memory.

Rhodiola rosea is a plant that grows in cold regions of Europe, Asia, and Alaska. It has been mentioned for its medicinal use dating as far back as the first century AD by the Greek physician Dioscorides. Rhodiola is used specifically for its ability to increase energy, reduce stress of the mind and body because it decreases cortisol, helps burn fat and improve brain performance.
